Munich (dpa) - The first local branch of Bavaria‘s Christian Social Union (CSU) has demanded that party leader Horst Seehofer step down after the party‘s dismal results in regional elections Sunday.

The leader of the local branch in Kronach, Juergen Baumgaertner, told dpa late Monday that while assembling a new Bavarian government should take priority initially, his branch is calling for a party conference to be held once a cabinet has been agreed to address the issue of renewing CSU personnel, "including the goal of replacing Horst Seehofer."

Baumgaertner stressed that his party branch appreciated the "great success" Seehofer had brought the party over the years. "But we believe everything has its time," he added.

His local branch was of the opinion that this was not the time to muddle along as usual, Baumgaertner asserted.

Seehofer, who is federal interior minister in Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s cabinet in Berlin, has dismissed calls to resign as head of the CSU after the party lost its parliamentary majority in the southern state.

"I am not going to engage in discussions about staff changes," Seehofer said earlier Monday in response to a journalist‘s question as to whether he would step down over the unprecedented result.

Party leaders seem reluctance to take any steps before another regional election in two weeks in Hesse state.

Seehofer suggested that the election result and the party‘s response be addressed in-depth in November or December.
