New Delhi (dpa) - President Emmanuel Macron is hoping for a bright start to France and India‘s joint push to promote solar power, as the two allies prepare to host a founding conference for their project.

The International Solar Alliance was launched by the two countries on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in November 2015, with an aim to boost solar energy. The initiative is hosting its first summit in New Delhi on Sunday.

The alliance is a "sunshine club" of 121 solar resource-rich countries. Twenty-four leaders of these states are attending Sunday‘s conference along with delegates from other member states.

Besides India and France, members include Australia, China and Brazil.

The alliance aims for deployment of over 1,000 gigawatts of solar energy and mobilization of at least 1 trillion dollars into solar energy by the year 2030.

The international secretariat of the alliance is headquartered in New Delhi and the alliance is seen as an international diplomatic thrust by India.

"The International Solar Alliance is a major initiative for the future of Planet Earth," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at a press briefing with Macron after bilateral talks in New Delhi on Saturday.

"What began as an Indian idea turned into an initiative and from tomorrow will be a reality," Macron said.

The Indian government has committed to contributing 27 million dollars to the alliance for creating a corpus, building infrastructure and for recurring expenditure between 2016-17 to 2020-21.

The alliance is hoping to raise voluntary contributions from member countries, besides raising funds from the corporate sector, multilateral agencies and other institutions to fund projects and research on solar energy.
