SIDEBAR India and France move to speed up stalled Jaitapur nuclear project

New Delhi (dpa) - India and France have signed an agreement to revive stalled efforts to build what would be India‘s largest nuclear power plant.

The Jaitapur nuclear plant project is likely to have six reactors with a capacity of 1,650 megawatts each. Jaitapur is located in Ratnagiri district of the western state of Maharashtra.

A preliminary agreement for the project, long in the pipeline, was signed between the Electricite de France (EDF) and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), a state-run agency, during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday.

"This agreement prescribes a way forward for the implementation of the Jaitapur nuclear power project," a note from India‘s Ministry of External Affairs said.

The pact, titled an "Industrial Way Forward Agreement," is a framework document and does not lay down details like cost and technical aspects which would now be worked out, NDTV news channel reported citing diplomatic sources.

The first agreement on the project was signed in 2010 between French state-controlled nuclear engineering firm Areva SA and NCPIL, but ran into hurdles over land rights disputes, protests by environment protection activists and a law passed by Indian Parliament on accident liability.
