SIDEBAR Farah now out to emulate Viren after falling like the Finn

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Britain‘s Mo Farah will aim to emulate Lasse Viren with back-to-back distance doubles at the Olympics, after matching the legendary Finn Saturday with a gold-after-falling achievement in the Rio Games 10,000 metres.

Viren won the 10,000m in 1972 after falling in the 12th lap en route to the doubles with the 5,000 that year in Munich and 1976 in Montreal.

Farah took the double at London 2012 and on Saturday recovered from a fall at a similar mid-race stage as Viren, getting tripped by American training partner Galen Rupp.

Kenyan Paul Tanui then kicked with 300m left from a five-strong leader group but Farah passed him entering the home straight to triumph in 27 minutes 5.64 seconds.

Tanui took silver in 27:05.64 and the bronze went to Ethiopia‘s Tamirat Tola in 27:06.26.

Farah is the fifth man to get successive Olympic 10,000m titles and is bidding now for a fourth big double in a row overall, following the 2012 Olympics and 2013 and 2015 worlds.

But the Somalia-born star readily admitted that he feared the worst after tumbling down.

"When I went down, I thought, ‘Oh my God, that is it.‘ I just got up and wanted to stick with the guys and stay strong. It‘s never easy but everyone knows what I can do," Farah said.

"I thought about all my hard work and that it could all be gone in a minute. I wasn‘t going to let it go."

However he gave a thumbs-up sign once on his feet again, and prevailed in the end as the Kenyan and Ethiopian attempts to wear him dowm were in vain yet again.

Tanui at least tried to kick in the last lap but it was simply not good enough.

"I was hoping (to get a gap), but it didn‘t happen. I got second place and I am very happy about that," he said.

Tola acknowledged that "Mo Farah is obviously a great athlete" as the cat-and-mouse game with the Briton Farah proved fruitless despite some tempo changes after a slow start into the race.
