SIDEBAR Emojis, trolls and WWIII: 5 questions put to Merkel from YouTubers

Berlin (dpa) - Given the chance, what would young YouTube viewers ask German Chancellor Angela Merkel?

On Wednesday, they were given the opportunity to do so, as four video bloggers fielded questions from their online communities and posed them to Merkel in a live-streamed interview.

Here are five issues put to the chancellor from the world of social media:

Lisa Sophie, whose YouTube channel "ItsColeslaw" boasts 240,000 subscribers, said many members of her community were "very disappointed" by Merkel‘s vote against same-sex marriage.

"For me, marriage is, in keeping with the constitution, a union of man and woman," the chancellor explained.

"But I also campaigned to make sure that this vote took place at all," she added.

AlexiBexi, or Alexander Boehm, who has attracted a YouTube following of 1.14 million with tech tips and comical German renditions of English songs, wanted to know what Merkel‘s favourite emoji is.

"Smiley," the chancellor said, with a grin. "If it‘s really good then with a small heart next to it."

Ischtar Isik says many people questioned why a 21-year-old beauty blogger like herself should be asked to interview the chancellor.

"I think it‘s quite silly to say that someone who is involved in things to do with beauty ... can‘t make a proper decision for the election. That is just really absurd," Merkel said.

Isik, who has 1.1 million subscribers, said the livestream was the first time she had conducted an interview, to which Merkel replied: "You‘ve got talent."

Isik asked Merkel about the hateful comments sometimes aimed at her as chancellor.

"I find hate and escalation is always a sign of inability," she replied.

For followers of Mirko Drotschmann, or "MrWissen2Go," the threat of nuclear war with North Korea is a major concern.

Merkel sought to reassure those watching. "We are are doing everything and I don‘t see this fear," she said, repeating her assertion that there is no "military solution" to the Koreas conflict.
