SIDEBAR British security service to re-examine more Russian deaths

London (dpa) - Britain‘s domestic security service MI5 will re-examine several suspicious deaths of Russians, in which foul play had been ruled out, following the nerve-agent poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal, Home Secretary Amber Rudd said.

"The government was aware of these allegations and takes seriously any suggestions that a foreign state has engaged in murder on UK soil," Rudd said in a letter dated March 10 but first published by a parliamentary home affairs committee on Tuesday.

"As you know, police investigations and coronial inquests at the time did not discover evidence of foul play," Rudd wrote to opposition Labour lawmaker Yvette Cooper, the committee‘s chair.

Rudd said she wants to satisfy herself "that the allegations are nothing more than that."

"The police and MI5 agree and will assist in that endeavour," she said.

Cooper wrote to Rudd last week urging a review of 14 cases of Russians who died in Britain.

They include Alexander Perepilichny, who collapsed and died outside his home while jogging in southern England in 2012.

The 44-year-old had reported death threats against him following his accusations of large-scale tax fraud by Russian officials.

An expert in plant toxicology told a hearing in 2015 that Perepilichny had ingested a natural poison from the plant genus gelsemium before he died.

But police insisted his death was not suspicious.
