SIDEBAR: US considering sanctions against Ukraine

Washington (dpa) - The United States raised the possibility Wednesday of sanctions against Ukraine over the ongoing crackdown on opposition demonstrators.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the US was getting "back into a conversation" with Europe and the International Monetary Fund on stepping up their response.

"All policy options including sanctions are on the table, in our view," Psaki said. "But obviously, that is still being evaluated."

That "strong message" had been communicated in the region by Assistant Secretary Victoria Nuland, Psaki said. Nuland has been talking to the protesters as well as Ukrainian leaders in recent days.

Psaki declined to give specifics about possible sanctions.

In recent weeks, Washington had repeatedly called for dialogue in the growing tension between Ukraine‘s Moscow-leaning government and Europe-leaning protesters.

Tuesday use of force by police in Kiev drew a sharper reaction from Washington.

"The United States was appalled last night by what happened in Kiev," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

Earlier, Secretary of State John Kerry expressed "disgust" at the police action, calling for restraint and offering solidarity to the protesters.

"The United States stands with the people of Ukraine," he said. "They deserve better."
