Serbian, Croatian giants fly to Rio squished in low-budget seats

Belgrade (dpa) - Serbia‘s water polo team, one of the safest bets for an Olympic gold, on Tuesday complained about the conditions they faced during an arduous trip to Rio de Janeiro, Belgrade daily Blic reported.

"This trip ... to Rio is over. We survived 33 hours of traveling - I will not comment," Blic quoted a blog of veteran Filip Filipovic as saying. Filipovic also posted a photo of three players literally squeezed into seats of a low-budget airline.

The reigning European and world champions are the hot favourites to win the first team gold for Serbia since the last remnant of former Yugoslavia disintegrated in 2006.

Serbia‘s water polo athletes were not the only who protested about the poor conditions on the long flight to Rio. Croatian basketball star Bojan Bogdanovic had his complaints as well.

"The Croatian Olympic Committee and basketball organization really went out of their way to secure a comfortable 32-hour ride for us," Bojan Bogdanovic of the US National Basketball Association‘s Brooklyn Nets wrote on his Facebook page last week.

With that, Bogdanovic posted a photo of his and teammates‘ knees pressing into the back of the seats in front of them.

Many water polo and basketball players are routinely over than 2 metres tall.
