Seehofer vows 'polite behaviour' towards Merkel after Bavaria losses

Berlin (dpa) - German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer says he will pursue a less contentious relationship with Chancellor Angela Merkel after indications that his hardline stance in her government was partly responsible for his Bavarian CSU‘s devastating poll result.

Asked by an Egyptian journalist whether he would fight less with Merkel as a result, Seehofer laughed and promised to demonstrate "polite behaviour" going forward.

The CSU‘s vote share dropped more than 10 percentage points to 37.2 per cent in state elections in Bavaria on Sunday against the backdrop of a rise in support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Seehofer has repeatedly come under fire for his combative stance in Merkel‘s government, earlier this year by insisting on turning away migrants at Germany‘s southern border and later for his staunch defence of embattled intelligence chief Hans-Georg Maassen.

Responding to myriad calls to step down as interior minister and from his role as CSU chief, Seehofer said during Tuesday‘s press conference that he would be "ready to talk about staff changes" once the CSU had formed a coalition government in Bavaria.

He said any debate about his potential succession should come after government formation to "ensure stability."
