Berlin (dpa) - Peter Tauber, the secretary general of German Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s conservative party, is set to announce his resignation, sources told dpa on Sunday.

While Tauber, 43, has been a key ally of Merkel, he has been out of favour with more staunchly conservative members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) over his views on immigration and same-sex marriage.

Tauber was also among those blamed for the CDU‘s poor performance in September‘s national elections, when it suffered its worst results since World War II.

His departure comes as Merkel, in her 13th year in power, seeks to refresh the party‘s inner circle ahead of the formation of a new government.

Tauber took a long break after the election due a serious illness that required a hospital stay. He has been rehabilitating at his home in the state of Hesse since the beginning of February.

Due to his ill health, Tauber has played a limited role in the coalition talks that followed the election.

After more than four months of political limbo, Merkel‘s conservative bloc and the centre-left Social Democrats hope to have a government in place by early March.

Tauber is expected to make his decision official on Monday. It was not initially clear who Merkel would put forward as his successor. Party sources told dpa the CDU is aiming to elect a new secretary general at a party congress on February 26.

He has held the position since December 2013 and his term was set to last through the end of the year.
