Moscow (dpa) - Eight of the 23 athletes who tested positive for forbidden substances in retests of samples from the 2012 Olympics are Russian, the nation‘s Olympic Committee (ROC) said on Saturday.

A statement said that the ROC will now be awaiting the examination of the b-samples and therefore gave no further details apart from saying that the athletes were from three sports.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Friday that it retested 265 samples of athletes from London 2012 who could potentially compete at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August. It said the 23 athletes are from six countries and five sports.

The IOC said a week earlier that 31 athletes tested positive in retests of samples from Beijing 2008, with the ROC saying later that 14 of them were Russians.

Russia has been rocked by doping allegations and its athletics team has been suspended by the ruling body IAAF which will decide on June 17 whether the team can compete in Rio.
