Russia: Syrian rebel drone facility destroyed in artillery strike

Moscow (dpa) - A Syrian rebel facility for assembling aerial attack drones in the north-western Idlib province has been destroyed in an artillery strike, Russia‘s Defence Ministry said Friday.

The seek-and-destroy mission was carried out after rebel drones attacked Russia‘s Hmeimim airbase and Tartus naval facility on Syria‘s western coast last weekend.

Several of the radio-operated drones used in those attacks were intercepted, and a technological assessment determined they could be remotely controlled from a distance of about 100 kilometres, the Defence Ministry said at the time.

Russia, the main military backer of Syria‘s government, announced last month that it had largely defeated the extremist group Islamic State in the war-torn country and would focus on restoring peace.

Russia has positioned itself to maintain a permanent military presence in Syria, with forces prepared to root out insurgent groups.
