Moscow (dpa) - Russian athletes implicated in the prohibited use of performance-enhancing drugs during the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics should return their medals, the Russian Athletics Federation said Thursday.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has demanded that 19 Russian track-and-field athletes return their medals, but only one has done so, the federation said in a statement on its website.

Anton Kokorin, who won bronze in the men‘s 4x400-metre relay at the 2008 Games, handed in his medal after his team-mate Denis Alekseyev tested positive for drug use, the statement said.

Athletes must "respect their Olympic oath and obey the rules of the IOC," the Russian federation said.
