Russia pleased with Trump statement on importance of sovereignty

New York (dpa) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday he was pleased to hear US President Donald Trump state the importance of international sovereignty in foreign affairs.

It is important to "lead by example rather than to dictate one‘s will to other peoples," Lavrov said in his speech to the UN General Assembly. "Countries with different values, cultures and aspirations can not just coexist, but they can work side by side on the basis of mutual respect."

Lavrov also said Russia has done its part in working to eliminate the heritage of the Cold War, but its actions have not been reciprocated by its western partners.

He said NATO is seeking to revive the tone that existed in "the era of opposing alliances" instead of building a dialogue with Moscow.

"NATO is trying to restore the climate of the Cold War and is refusing to implement that principle they solemnly declared in the ‘90s - the principle of equal and indivisible security in the OECD area," the Russian diplomat said, referring to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Lavrov criticized NATO for what he said was a "heedless expansion" eastward after the end of the Cold War, saying it had fostered anti-Russian sentiments and planted the seeds for the long-running conflict in Ukraine.

He also warned that war hysteria around the North Korea‘s nuclear and missile programme is a "dangerous dead-end track" and called for a dialogue on this issue, and urged additional efforts aimed at restoring stability in Syria and Iraq.
