Moscow (dpa) - Russia is introducing new banknotes depicting themes from the region of Crimea, which it annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

The new 200-rouble (3.46-dollar) note will be put into circulation on the Black Sea peninsula soon, Russian central bank chief Elvira Nabiullina said on Thursday, according to the TASS news agency. The banknotes are planned to appear nationwide by the end of the year.

Russia annexed Ukraine‘s Crimea region three years ago in retaliation for Ukraine ousting its pro-Russian president, in what the Kremlin has denounced as a Western-orchestrated coup.

Most Russian banknotes are decorated with historically important people and places of interest from around the country.

The Crimean themes were chosen by the Russian people online from among thousands of possible places of interest.

The ruins of Chersonesus, a former Greek colony found on the modern-day Crimean Peninsula, adorn the new green currency notes.

Previously there was no 200-rouble note. Moscow had the special notes printed and Crimea-themed coins minted after the annexation of Crimea.
