Russia calls new Ukrainian law 'preparation for new war'

Moscow (dpa) - Recently passed Ukrainian legislation on reintegrating conflict-ridden eastern regions enables the country‘s leadership to attack civilians, Russia‘s Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

"This cannot be called anything except a preparation for a new war," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Ukraine‘s parliament passed the legislation earlier in the day. Along with the reintegration measures, the bill states that neighbouring Russia is directly responsible for a military conflict in eastern Ukraine and is thus liable for damages.

Russian-supported rebel groups have been battling the Ukrainian military for nearly four years in that country‘s two eastern-most regions, which border Russia.

More than 10,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which erupted when Ukraine ousted its pro-Russian president amid mass protests calling for closer ties with the West.
