Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - England‘s Justin Rose scored the first hole in one in Olympic history as golf returned to the Games after 112 years on Thursday.

Graham Delaet of Canada was the early leader in the clubhouse after carding a five-under-par first round of 66, with six birdies in all plus a bogey on the par-four 11th on an overcast and windy morning.

Rose, the 2013 US Open winner, meanwhile aced the par-three fourth, taking him to three under early in his round.

South Korea‘s An Byeong Hun finished two strokes behind on three under and the only golfer from the Olympic host nation Brazil, Adilson da Silva, had a one-over round of 72 on the 7,128-metre Olympic Golf Course.

Da Silva had the honour of making the opening tee shot as golf became Olympic for the first time since 1904, in the absence of several top stars such as Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day.

Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson is the top seed but Germany‘s Martin Kaymer, his playing partner in the opening two rounds, is also a double major winner.

The field also includes British reigning Masters champion Danny Willett and 2016 Open champ Henrik Stenson of Sweden.
