Romanian railway workers delay trains in protest over late wages

Bucharest (dpa) - Romanian railway employees delayed dozens of trains Wednesday by several hours in a "spontaneous" protest over late wages, the state railroad company CFR said.

Employees said they undertook the unannounced strike after the government failed to pay their entire December wage. The majority of CFR workers only received between 50 and 75 per cent of their normal compensation.

Romania, which implemented an austerity programme in return for a 20-billion-euro (26.7 billion dollars) bailout from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2009, has still not passed its 2013 budget.

The new Socialist-led government is presently negotiating the budget with the IMF in order to align it with conditions of a 5.3-billion-euro (7 billion dollars) precautionary loan which expires in April. dpa kl bb sdl Author: Kathrin Lauer
