Rio Games and Tokyo payment on IOC executives agenda

Lausanne, Switzerland (dpa) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) continued its executive board meetings Thursday, with the upcoming Games in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo part of the agenda.

Rio officials will brief the board on their final preparations for the August 5-21 Games while the Tokyo 2020 team will have to explain a dubious payment of 2 million dollars during the bid process to a bank account in Singapore linked to the son of former world athletics chief Lamine Diack.

The meetings started Wednesday when the IOC said that its president Thomas Bach will fly to Rio later in June to personally check on the final preparations, and pledged to further step up its fight against doping.

Pre-Rio drug testing funds were doubled to 500,000 dollars to target, among others, athletes from Russia, Kenya and Mexico, and further retests from 2008 and 2012 Games are planned to target medal winners who may compete in Rio.

The IOC will also hold a stakeholders meeting on June 21 for a standard approach regarding eligibility of athletes, the main focus being "the difficult decision between collective responsibility and individual justice."

That was in reference to various doping allegations against Russia which has seen its athletics team suspended. The ruling athletics body IAAF is to meet June 17 over the case.

Opinions appear divided whether the entire Russian athletics squad or even entire Olympic team should be banned, or whether clean Russian athletes should be allowed to compete.

The IOC also said it aims for quick rulings on 55 athletes caught doping in 2008 and 2012 Games retests to keep them out of Rio - 22 of them Russians, according to the Russian Olympic Committee.
