Right-wing protest sparks stand-off near Barcelona attack site

Barcelona (dpa) - Scuffles broke out between right-wing demonstrators and passersbys on Friday at the scene of this week‘s van attack in central Barcelona.

Some of the demonstrators carried banners associated with the identitarian movement, a network of white nationalist groups focused on preserving European identity. Some of their banners read "Defend Europe" and "Stop Islamization of Europe."

The Islamic State extremist group has claimed responsibility for Thursday‘s Barcelona attack, which left 13 dead. Several of the people linked to the assault are from Morocco.

A crowd of people opposed the right-wingers, prompting a stand-off near the Placa Catalunya, near where the van struck a crowd.

The counter-demonstrators shouted slogans like "Fascists out of our district!" and "You will not pass!" a slogan used by the Republican side during Spain‘s civil war. Others simply held rainbow flags.

Eventually the right-wing members left the scene, but shouted triumphantly as they did.

"What happened in Barcelona yesterday was an act of hatred, but this is the same kind of hatred," bank employee Eduard Sanchez told dpa.

The stand-off prevented the foreign ministers of Germany and France, recently arrived in Barcelona, from laying flowers at the attack site.
