London (dpa) - The British government has condemned the "suprising and disappointing" appointment of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as an ambassador for the World Health Organization, the Press Association reported Saturday.

A British government spokesman said Mugabe‘s appointment as a "goodwill ambassador" to help tackle non-communicable diseases threatened the organization‘s reputation regarding its work against chronic illness.

The long-time ruler has been sanctioned by the European Union and the US over his record of human rights abuses.

The spokesman added that the government had registered its concerns with WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

According to the Press Association, Tedros chose Mugabe as an ambassador because he had influence in the region that he could use for good.
