Washington (dpa) - John Dowd, a top lawyer representing US President Donald Trump in the special counsel‘s investigation of Russian election meddling, has stepped down, the New York Times reported Thursday.

Dowd, a prominent Washington lawyer hired in June 2017 to lead the legal representation of Trump in Robert Mueller‘s widening investigation, emailed several US media outlets to say he was leaving.

"I love the president and wish him well," he was quoted as saying in the message.

According to one of two unnamed sources cited by the New York Times, Trump had increasingly ignored Dowd‘s legal advice.

dpa was unable to reach Dowd‘s law office for comment on Thursday.

Dowd, 77, issued a statement last week calling on the Justice Department to halt Mueller‘s investigation of the Russian meddling investigation. Dowd first said he was speaking for Trump as his lawyer, before clarifying that he was speaking only for himself.

Trump this week added Joseph diGenova, a conservative television commentator and Washington lawyer, to his personal legal team.

In September, Dowd and Ty Cobb, another lawyer on Trump‘s legal team, had a lengthy conversation in a Washington restaurant about the investigation and disagreements with the White House counsel, within earshot of a New York Times reporter.
