Madrid (dpa) - One of the four suspected terrorists arrested in connection with last week‘s attacks in Spain has admitted that the cell planned to bomb Barcelona‘s world-famous Sagrada Familia basilica, media reports said on Tuesday.

Mohamed Houli Chemlal, 21, said the 12-member cell planned to blow up other iconic buildings in the city, famed for its architecture, El Mundo newspaper reported, citing investigators.

The plans were foiled when the cell‘s bomb-making factory in a flat in the town of Alcanar exploded. The cell had hoarded 120 gas canisters in the flat to construct home-made bombs.

Police confirmed on Monday that the mastermind of the cell, the imam Abdelbaki Es Satty, died in the explosion, as did another member of the cell.

Other members of the cell went on to drive a van into pedestrians in Barcelona‘s central thoroughfare of Las Ramblas on Thursday, leaving 13 people dead and more than 120 injured.

The driver of the van, Moroccan Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, stabbed a man to death during his escape from the scene of the attack, while later the same day a woman was killed and six people were injured when a car drove into crowds in Cambrils, about 100 kilometres south of Barcelona, bringing the number of victims to 15.

The occupants of that car were shot dead by police.

Police shot and killed Abouyaaqoub, who appeared to be wearing an explosive belt, in the town of Subirats, about 50 kilometres west of Barcelona, on Monday.

Chemlal was injured in the Alcanar explosion. Examining magistrate Fernando Abreu planned to question the three other suspects on Tuesday evening.
