Report: Role of French president's wife to be set out in charter

Paris (dpa) - The role of Brigitte Macron, wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, will be set out in a "transparency charter," she told Elle magazine.

The charter will reaffirm that she is not paid and explain her "missions and means," Brigitte Macron said in an interview to be published on Friday, excerpts from which the magazine put online.

Brigitte Macron‘s role has been a subject of controversy in recent weeks, with a petition against her having any official status gaining more than 300,000 signatures on the website change.org.

A YouGov opinion poll for the Huffington Post website after Macron‘s election in May found that 68 per cent of those questioned opposed the creation of an official status of "first lady."

During his election campaign, Macron said he wanted a "framework" for the role of the president‘s spouse to be defined, explaining that he wanted to "leave behind a kind of French hypocrisy."

The wives of previous French presidents have in practice had an office and staff in the Elysee Palace despite not having had any official role or recognized status.

In an interview with TF1 television in April, Macron said that his wife would not be paid from the public purse but "she will have an existence... she will have a recognized role."

Brigitte Macron told Elle that the Elysee website would also list her engagements.

"The important thing is that everything is very clear: like all my predecessors, I will take up my public role, but the French people will from now on know what means are at my disposal," she said.
