Report: French Interior Minister called in over daughters' jobs

Paris (dpa) - French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has called in Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux over a report the latter employed his then-teenage daughters in his parliamentary office, news agency Agence France-Presse said early Tuesday.

The development came hours after broadcaster TMC reported that Le Roux‘s daughters had held a total of 24 short term contracts in parliament, mainly during school and college holidays, with the younger daughter only 15 during her first contract.

The minister told the programme that his daughters had been engaged in short-term summer jobs.

He rejected any comparison with conservative presidential candidate Francois Fillon, who is under investigation for allegedly giving his wife and children fake jobs as parliamentary aides.

"When there‘s filing or certain other parliamentary jobs to be done, I think it‘s good training," Le Roux said.

TMC‘s Quotidien programme also reported that two of the contracts covered periods where one daughter was doing a full-time internship in Belgium and the other was attending school.

The broadcaster quoted Le Roux‘s office as saying that on those occasions the girls made up their hours during their holidays and also worked off-site and in their free time.

Fillon has sunk to third place in the opinion polls since the allegations about his wife‘s job emerged in January. He denies any wrongdoing but last week was placed under formal investigation by judges.
