Report: Donald Trump Jr corresponded with WikiLeaks during campaign

Washington (dpa) - US President Donald Trump‘s son, Donald Trump Jr, exchanged a series of messages with WikiLeaks during his father‘s presidential campaign, the Atlantic magazine reported Monday.

WikiLeaks, which published a series of leaked emails from Democrat Hillary Clinton‘s campaign during the 2016 election, sent repeated messages to the younger Trump, urging him to promote their publications as well as to provide them with documents.

Trump Jr largely ignored the personal messages sent to him on Twitter by WikiLeaks, but occasionally responded or followed up on its requests.

The requests went beyond self-promotion, encouraging Trump Jr to release his father‘s tax returns to the anti-secrecy website, encouraging the elder Trump to contest the election should he lose and requesting that the president-elect tell Australia to appoint Julian Assange as US ambassador.

The communication has reportedly been turned over to Congress as part of an ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the election.

The exchange continued at least until July when it was revealed that the president‘s oldest son had met with a Russian lawyer because he was interested in damaging information about Clinton.
