Berlin (dpa) - The former poster child of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) said Saturday that her former party had taken her to court over a brand dispute, according to Bild newspaper.

"The AfD sued me in Munich to cancel the trademark I had registered for ‘The Blue Party‘," Frauke Petry told Bild in the online report.

A Munich court spokeswoman confirmed the case to the newspaper.

Petry left the party after its electoral success in the federal elections, saying the faction had become too extremist.

She had submitted "The Blue Party" as a trademark on October 14, and since January 19, it has been registered at Munich‘s patent office.

AfD spokesman Christian Lueth told Bild: "Our logo and similar markings or colours are meanwhile protected. We want to prevent imitators or political freeloaders from raising their profiles on our name and fooling the public."

He said the case was to prevent Petry‘s attempt to get her name out on the AfD‘s reputation.
