London (dpa) - A total of 40 MPs of Britain‘s ruling Conservative Party have agreed to sign a letter of no confidence in Prime Minister Theresa May, eight short of the 48 needed to force a leadership election, the Sunday Times newspaper reported.

The prime minister has been under pressure in the wake of a snap general election in June in which May unexpectedly lost her parliamentary majority.

Her government has also come in for criticism for its handling of Brexit negotiations with the European Union. Critics charge that six rounds of exit talks with the EU have brought little clarity on the process and the timetable.

Meanwhile the Mail on Sunday reported on the emergence of an alleged secret letter from cabinet ministers Boris Johnson and Michael Gove urging May to go forward with a hard Brexit.

In the letter, Johnson and Gove reportedly demand that transitional arrangements for the country‘s exit from the bloc must end on June 20, 2021.

Britain, a member of the EU since 1973, is the first country ever to begin procedures for leaving the bloc. It is to leave the EU in March 2019.

Johnson and Gove championed Brexit in the run-up to the 2016 referendum, while May backed the Remain camp at the time.
