Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - A new champion in the men‘s 1,500-metre freestyle will be crowned in Rio de Janeiro after title-holder Sun Yang failed to qualify for the final on Friday.

The Chinese Sun, who won the 200m free earlier in the Games, swam a lethargic race to finish well off the pace in 16th. Italy‘s Gregorio Paltrinieri qualified fastest.

The last swimming heats took place ahead of Michael Phelps seeking his 23rd Olympic gold medal in the 100m butterfly final later and Katie Ledecky chasing history in the 800m freestyle.

Phelps, who won the 200m individual medley Thursday, is looking for his fifth Rio gold against old rivals Chad le Clos and Lazslo Cseh though it was Singapore‘s Joseph Schooling who qualified fastest.

And Ledecky is trying to match the 48-year-old record set by Debbie Meyer at the 1968 Mexico City games of winning the women‘s 200m, 400m and 800m at the same Games.

Friday‘s other heats saw Denmark‘s Pernille Blume top the women‘s 50m freestyle with 100m champion Simone Manuel of the US 11th. Australian Cate Campbell was seventh after her disappointment in that race, reigning Dutch champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo was tied for eighth and Brazilian home fans could cheer Etiene Medieros who sneaked through 16th.

China‘s Chen Xinyi did not start, having tested positive for doping.

In the 4x100m medley relays, the women‘s heats were topped by the US from Canada with Britain‘s men taking the honours from US. Hosts Brazil qualified seventh.

Later Friday there are also finals in the women‘s 200m backstroke and men‘s 50m freestyle.
