REFILE Trump ex-adviser Bannon testifies in House probe

Washington (dpa) - Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist, testified Tuesday in private to a congressional committee probing alleged Russian ties to President Donald Trump‘s 2016 campaign.

His appearance in the the House of Representatives‘ Intelligence Committee follows a sharp rift earlier this month between Trump and Bannon, who was quoted extensively in book published this month that portrays Trump as as uninformed and unfit for office.

Separately, the New York Times reported that Bannon was subpoenaed for grand jury testimony by special prosecutor Robert Mueller, whose criminal probe is targeting similar questions about Russia and Trump‘s campaign.

The subpoena was issued last week, the newspaper reported, citing a person with direct knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Bannon might instead agree to an interview by special counsel investigators outside of the grand jury, the source told the Times.

Bannon, who was chief executive of Trump‘s general election campaign, stepped down last week as executive chairman of the alt-right website Breitbart News.

A former investment banker and military officer, Bannon had headed Breitbart before joining the campaign three months before Trump‘s surprise victory in November 2016.

He left the White House in August, but remained in contact with the president until this month, when the publication of "Fire and Fury: Inside Donald Trump‘s White House" prompted his former boss to tweet that Bannon had "not only lost his job, he lost his mind."

Author Michael Wolff quoted Bannon speculating that a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower between Russian government-connected individuals and campaign officials - including Trump‘s son and son-in-law - was "treasonous."
