Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - The sun was out and the wind had subsided as the Winter Olympics started a Super Thursday featuring the blue riband men‘s downhill ski race and the much anticipated debut of American ski star Mikaela Shiffrin in the giant slalom.

Norwegian cross-country ski queen Marit Bjoergen was among the favourites over 10 kilometres as she aimed to become the first woman to win seven Olympic golds, and Dutch speed skating icon Sven Kramer was bidding for a first 10,000m gold at last.

Germany‘s Laura Dahlmeier was hoping to make it three golds in as many Pyeongchang biathlon races, in the 15km event; and on the men‘s side Martin Forcade was aiming to add 20km gold to the pursuit title.

Nine medal events were scheduled overall on a busy day as the Olympics played catch-up after the women‘s biathlon and the two alpine races were rescheduled after falling victim to the heavy wind in previous days.

Apart from Dahlmeier, the hopes of medal table leaders Germany rested on the luge team event where the dominant nation seeks repeat gold.

The 2010 gold medallist Viktoria Rebensburg, along with France‘s Tessa Workey, was among the main challengers for Shiffrin in the giant slalom.

Surprise Kitzbuhel winner Thomas Dressen aimed to challenge the likes of 2014 winner Matthias Mayer of Austria, Swiss world champion Beat Feuz and Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal, after topping the downhill portion of the alpine combined earlier in the week.

German hopes of figure skating pairs gold meanwhile seemed remonte as Alyona Savchenko and Bruno Massot were a modest fourth going into the concluding free programme, with Chinese world champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong leading the way.

The day‘s other medal event was the men‘s snowboard cross, while preliminary action was scheduled in ice hockey, curling, freestyle skiing and skeleton.
