Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach is confident that Rio de Janeiro will host great Games from Friday onwards and confirms that the IOC is helping local organizers with advance payments.

"To summarise it: It is coming together," Bach tells a news conference Sunday.

"As always, there are some last-minute challenges. But Brazil has adressed the challenges and we are more confident than ever to have great Olympic Games a la Brazil - full of passion and joy of life."

Bach says several hiccups at the athletes‘ village have been solved, that water quality at the sailing venue is according to the standards of the World Health Organization, and that the crucial metro line to Olympic venues has finally opened.

The president also expresses his confidence in security measures to safeguard the August 5-21 Games and is positive about the financial situation with advance payments being made: "The IOC has helped the organizing committee to make sure that these Games will be a success we want them to be," Bach says.
