Moscow (dpa) - Olympic high jump champion Anna Chicherova of Russia is among 31 athletes who tested positive for forbidden substances in retests of samples from the 2008 Games, the Tass news agency said on Tuesday, quoting her coach.

The state agency also said that 14 of the 31 athletes were Russians, citing a source from the nation‘s Olympic Committee, and that most of them from the sport of athletics.

Chicherova won bronze at the Beijing Olympics eight years ago and then took gold 2012 in London.

Her coach Yevgeny Zagorulko told Tass: "Three days ago, Anna received a notice that her doping sample from the Beijing Olympic tested positive after a recheck and she called me.

"So far, this is at the development stage and this has not yet been finally confirmed. But all are aware of this and are dealing with the issue."

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said last week it retested 454 drug test samples from 2008, focusing on athletes who could potentially participate at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August.

The IOC said the 31 positive tests came from the latest scientific analysis methods, and that the athletes represented 12 countries and six sports.

No names were given because the b-samples were yet to be analysed.

The IOC also said that it is awaiting the result of 250 retests from London 2012, with the aim "to stop any drugs cheats coming to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro."

Russia has been rocked by doping allegations, with its athletics federation suspended and in danger of missing Rio. A final decision is to be made by mid-July.

In addition, the former head of the Moscow anti-doping lab, Grigory Rodchenkov, told the New York Times recently that 15 Russian medallists from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics were doped.

Rodchenkov said he helped provide performance-enhancing drugs to athletes and switch out drug-tainted test samples with clean ones.
