Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Long jumper Brittney Reese and triple jumper Christian Taylor not only aim for back-to-back Olympic gold in Rio, the Americans have also set their sights on the long standing world records in the disciplines.

Both athletes appeared super-confident at a news conference Wednesday ahead of the athletics events where Taylor has his final at an unusual morning slot Tuesday while Reese is on the next day in the evening - provided they qualify.

Reese leads the 2016 list with a personal best 7.31 metres and Taylor the triple jump with 17.78m. His personal best is 18.21m from last year‘s world championship gold, just eight centimetres shy of Jonathan Edwards‘ 21-year-old world record 18.29m.

Reese meanwhile is 21cm shy of the 1988 mark from Soviet Galina Chistyakova but like Taylor confident she can better the mark in Rio.

"For me and my mental coach we came up with this idea called 3-in-1, so that‘s to win the Olympics, break the American record, and break the World record all in one. So that‘s something that I am gunning for," Reese said.

"I know that I am capable of it, I just need the right atmosphere and the right crowd and do my part."

Taylor said: "A medal would be great, but coming out with a record is a win-win ... I am here today because I think that I can do it, and that‘s what drives me every day."
