Protesters demand release of jailed Catalan politicians

Madrid (dpa) - Tens of thousands of people held a protest in Barcelona on Saturday to demand the release of eight members of the deposed Catalan government.

Many participants held signs saying "Freedom for political prisoners" while others waved the Estelada, the flag of the Catalan independence movement.

With regard to the central government in Madrid, the protesters shouted: "Out with the occupying power!"

The government of Catalonia was dismissed by Madrid after the regional parliament approved a unilateral declaration of independence on October 27.

Several Catalan politicians have since been charged with rebellion, sedition and misappropriation of public funds for their role in the region‘s independence push.

The eight politicians who were arrested following the independence declaration are still being held in detention.

Catalonia‘s ex-president Carles Puigdemont and four other former cabinet members fled to Brussels after being sacked, and remain free there despite the issuance of an international arrest warrant.

The protest on Saturday was organized by two pro-independence civic organizations, the Catalan National Assembly and Omnium Cultural. The heads of both groups have also been arrested.
