Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Protesters clashed with police along the Olympic torch route near Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, local media reported.

Police used tear gas and fired rubber bullets at the protesters in Duque de Caizas, 20 kilometres outside of Rio, O Globo news site reported.

A 10-year-old girl was injured after being struck by a crowd-control projectile.

Protesters shouted slogans against Brazil‘s interim president Michel Temer, who took office while President Dilma Rousseff awaits impeachment proceedings later this month.

The Olympic torch arrived in Rio on Wednesday morning and was to be carried through towns in the city‘s outskirts before returning to the city centre on Thursday.

Last week, several protesters harassed torch relay runners in Angra dos Reis on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, even managing to extinguish the flame.

The torch route is heavily guarded by security.

The flame was lit in Greece in April, according to Olympic tradition, and has made a long journey through 325 cities in Brazil.

On Thursday the torch will be carried to Rio‘s iconic locations including Copacabana Beach, the statue of Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain.

South America‘s first Olympic Games will be held August 5-21, with more than 10,000 athletes from 206 countries taking part.
