Press freedom watchdog warns of security risks at Rio Olympics

New York (dpa) - Journalists covering the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro should be aware of security risks, the Committee to Protect Journalists said Thursday, noting that journalists have been detained and harassed at previous sporting events in Brazil.

The press freedom watchdog said that despite measures put in place by the International Olympic Committee to protect journalists by allowing them to formally register complaints, correspondents at the Olympic Games should take security precautions.

Authorities in Brazil will likely take heavy-handed measures to stop protests and ensure security at the Games, which could potentially limit journalists working to cover the events, the organization said.

During previous sporting events hosted by Brazil, such as the 2014 World Cup, media professionals were detained and injured while covering protests.

The organization noted that it had documented press freedom violations during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
