Warsaw (dpa) - Poland‘s new Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and his cabinet were sworn into office by the country‘s President Andrzej Duda on Monday, at the presidential palace in Warsaw.

In addition to assuming the role of prime minister, Morawiecki will stay on as both minister of finance and minister of development for the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party.

The 49-year-old economist from the city of Wroclaw plans for the time being to work with all the same ministers as his predecessor, Beata Szydlo. However, he announced that there will be a personnel change in his cabinet in 2018.

Morawiecki is expected to focus on Poland‘s economic policy. His predecessor Szydlo resigned unexpectedly last week, halfway through her term, and Morawiecki was named as her successor the same day.

Szydlo plans to remain in government as deputy prime minister, and is expected to be given a future cabinet post in social policy. As prime minister, she had implemented several of the PiS party‘s election promises, such as child benefit and minimum wage, and she remains very popular with Poles.

According to experts, PiS party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski continues to be seen as the country‘s leading political power broker.
