Phelps: 'I want four golds at Rio games'

Berlin (dpa) - US swimming star Michael Phelps says his aim is to win four gold medals at the Rio Olympics, hedging his remarks in an interview with the German daily Die Welt that it‘s easier said than done.

But a greater aim would be entering the history books if he did manage to win a gold medal.

"It would be fantastic, to be the first swimmer over 30 to win Olympic gold in an individual event," said Phelps, who is 31 and who over four previous Olympic games has amassed 18 gold medals.

"I want to win four golds. But saying it brings you nothing. In 2012 I also wanted to defend my title in the 200 metres butterfly and ended up losing it after all," he commented to Die Welt. He added that "nobody puts more pressure on me than I do on myself."

Phelps said that in his quest for more Olympic glory, he has been extensively controlled for doping.

"This year I have given blood and urine samples at least twice a month, sometimes even three," he said. "When it comes to anti-doping controls I am probably the most-tested athlete in the history of the Olympics."
