"I"m sure it will be strenuous but I"m looking forward to it," Petry told a newspaper.

The AfD leader is expecting a child with her husband and party colleague Marcus Pretzell in the first half of the year.

Petry, 41, and Pretzell, 43, each already have four children from previous marriages.

"With all four children, I was lucky to be able to arrange my working hours quite freely and took them along almost everywhere," Petry said.

Pretzell is AfD leader for the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where he is to stand in the state election in May.

Petry is a member of the Saxony state parliament and is to run in the national election in September.
