Brussels (dpa) - Salah Abdeslam, a key suspect in the November 13, 2015, terrorist attacks in Paris, will be prosecuted in Belgium for allegedly participating in a shooting during a 2016 police raid in Brussels, the Belgian prosecutor‘s office confirmed on Thursday.

The 27-year-old Frenchman and another suspect will face charges of illegal weapons possession and attempted murder for allegedly taking part in a shootout during a terrorism raid on March 15, 2016, in the Forest neighbourhood of Brussels.

Abdeslam managed to escape the raid in which one terrorism suspect was killed and several policemen were injured.

He was captured three days later in Molenbeek, the western Brussels neighbourhood where several perpetrators in previous Paris and Brussels attacks were known to have lived.

After his arrest, Abdeslam was extradited to France, where he currently faces terrorism charges for his suspected role in the November 2015 attacks in Paris, in which 130 people died in suicide bombings and shootings across the French capital.

The terrorist attacks on Brussels, which killed more than 30 people, took place just days after Abdeslam‘s arrest.
