Paris (dpa) - Paris and the neighbouring town of Saint Denis were on Monday marking the second anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks seen in France.

Islamic State extremists killed 130 people in a series of attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris and at the nearby Stade de France stadium in Saint Denis.

The ceremonies were simple and sober, in line with the wishes of the victims‘ families.

President Emmanuel Macron and the mayor of Saint Denis, Laurent Russier, first laid a wreath outside the Stade de France, where the first attack of the night took place two years earlier.

Three terrorists blew themselves up outside the stadium after failing to gain entry to a friendly match between France and Germany. The only victim was a bus driver who had ferried fans to the game.

Macron then headed to the 10th arrondissement of Paris, where gunmen opened fire on customers sitting outside a bar and restaurant in the first in a series of similar attacks.

The president and Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo laid a wreath, after which the names of the victims who fell there were read out and the dignitaries and victims‘ families stood for a minute‘s silence.

Francois Hollande, who was president at the time of the attacks, also attended, as did Macron‘s wife Brigitte and other officials.

The Paris attacks were the worst in a series of atrocities that has cost the lives of more than 230 people in France since January 2015.
