Palestinians demand British apology for century-old Israel decision

Ramallah (dpa) - Britain owes the Palestinians an apology for an "historic mistake" that deprived them of a homeland, according to protesters who gathered in the West Bank to mark the centennial of a key document they see as pivotal to Israel‘s formation.

Since Israel was created in 1948 out of land once known as the British Mandate of Palestine, fighting between the two sides has led to many Palestinians fleeing the country and a series of bloody conflicts.

At issue Wednesday was the Balfour Declaration, a November 2, 1917, letter from then British foreign secretary Arthur Balfour to a British Jewish community leader that promised British support for "a national home for the Jewish people."

Although it remains unclear how pivotal the letter was to the formation of Israel, Palestinian leaders have long held it up as proof of a betrayal that robbed them of their own country. Britain also made promises of an independent country to the Palestinians during this phase of history.

Demonstrators gathered in front of the British Council in Ramallah on Wednesday. According to the Maan news agency, PLO executive committee member Bassam al-Salchi referred to Britain‘s "crime" and "historic mistake" during the protest.

Palestinian leaders said last year they plan to sue Britain for the Balfour Declaration. They argued that wars triggered by the partition in 1948 of Palestine into Israeli and Palestinian states led to a persisting Palestinian refugee crisis as well as Israeli occupation of all of Palestinian territory.
