Las Vegas (dpa) - Osram is planning to create new jobs in Germany, focussing on high tech, such as driverless vehicles, company chief executive Olaf Berlien has told the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"High tech can also be made in Germany," he said. The company was investing more than 500 million euros (600 million dollars) in its plant in Regensburg in the southern state of Bavaria, Berlien said.

"The staff complement will rise as a result from 2,200 currently to more than 3,000," he said.

And in Berlin Osram was setting up a new software and electronics centre for technologies around driverless vehicles.

"In this regard we are currently looking for staff. It‘s not easy to find good people, but I intend to persist," Berlien said.

"Germany as a production site and German engineering have achieved a lot," he added, emphasizing that he saw no grounds to manufacture outside Germany.

Company restructuring launched in 2015 led to the sale of the traditional lighting division to a Chinese investor.

The former Osram subsidiary LEDVANCE subsequently announced it planned to cut 1,300 jobs, equivalent to more than half the workforce in Germany.
