One in two German businesses feels sting of skilled labour deficit

Berlin (dpa) - One in two German businesses is having trouble filling positions that require skilled labour, research conducted by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) showed on Tuesday.

Of the 24,000 businesses included in the survey, roughly half said that the skilled labour shortage that has plagued Germany is starting to affect their business, while only slightly over a third said the same thing a year ago, the DIHK said.

The sectors that are particularly affected by the labour market gap are construction, logistics, gastronomy and nursing, the DIHK said, adding that this would have an adverse impact on investment and economic growth.

The body said that according to its own estimate, there are currently 1.6 million skilled job vacancies that cannot be filled and that this figure will continue to increase in the coming years.

DIHK chief Achim Dercks said one of the reasons for the deficit may be demographic trends in Germany, which has one of the lowest birthrates in the world.

Dercks added that immigration from other European Union countries in recent years had served to ameliorate the situation, and that immigration from outside the EU, including people who came during the refugee crisis, could also help to plug the gap.
