Ombre-haired Fraser-Pryce tops Olympic 100m heats

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - The speed was there as usual, and the special hairdo for the big occasion as well, as ombre-haired Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce started the quest for a record third straight Olympic gold in the 100-metre dash in familiar fashion.

Known as "pocket rocket" for her size and speed, the Jamaican was the only runner to dip below 11 seconds when she won her heat in 10.96 seconds, her yellow and green hair flying as she stormed down the track.

Trinidad and Tobago‘s Michelle-Lee Ahye had 11.00. Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands, who won silver behind Fraser-Pryce over 100m and gold over 200m at last year‘s worlds in Beijing, was also safely through into Saturday‘s semi-finals, with the final later that day.

Fraser-Pryce has the chance to get the first hat-trick in a women‘s Olympic individual event as New Zealand shot-putter Valerie Adams and Ethiopian 10,000m runner Tirunest Dibaba failed to achieve the feat Friday. The other candidate in Rio is Czech javelin thrower Barbora Spotakova.
