Berlin (dpa) - Medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be made from recycled material as local organizers called on the Japanese population to donate "discarded or obsolete electronic devices" for the purpose.

"The organizing committee aims to collect as much as eight tonnes of metal (gold: 40 kilograms, silver: 4,920kg, bronze: 2,944kg), which after the production process will result in two tonnes, an amount needed to produce 5,000 Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic medals," the Committee said in a statement Wednesday.

Collection boxes will be installed throughout Japan until the eight-tonne target is reached.
