Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Nathan Adrian, the 2012 Olympic champion in the men‘s 100-metre freestyle, survived a huge scare in the heats of the event in Rio Tuesday while Hungary‘s Daniel Gyurta was not so lucky in his race.

Adrian, who anchored the United States to 4x100m freestyle relay gold earlier in the Games, qualified in the 16th and last position for the later semi-finals by just 3 hundredths of a second. Australia‘s Kyle Chalmers topped the rankings in a junior world record of 47.90 seconds.

While Adrian squeaked through by the skin of his teeth, 2 hundredths of a second were enough to eliminate men‘s 200m breaststroke champion Gyurta. He finished 17th, one place out of the semi-finals, in heats topped by Russia‘s Anton Chupkov.

In the women‘s 200m butterfly his compatriot Katinka Hosszu elected not to start ahead of her bid for a third gold in the final of the 200m individual medley later in the day. Hosszu gave up the chance of a podium finish in the event which was topped by Spain‘s Mireia Garcia Belmonte with Japanese world champion Natsumi Hoshi seventh.

Hosszu won the 400m medley in world record time Saturday before adding the 100m backstroke crown Monday.

"There is absolutely no problem with Katinka," a Hungarian team spokesperson said. "She just decided that in such a busy schedule, it would be best to rest and be prepared for the race tonight."

And in the men‘s 4x200m freestyle relay, Britain reached the final first from the US and Russia.

In the other later finals, Americans Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps pursue their second gold medals in Rio. Ledecky is involved in arguably the race of the week, in the women‘s 200m freestyle against Sarah Sjostrom and Federica Pellegrini, while Phelps can become the oldest male individual gold medallist if he wins the 200m butterfly.
