Nuzman resigns as Brazil's top Olympian, Wanderley takes over

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Carlos Nuzman resigned as president of Brazil‘s Olympic Committee (COB) late Wednesday over corruption allegations around Rio de Janeiro‘s election as 2016 Games hosts, and has been replaced by Paulo Wanderley.

The COB said that the resignation letter of Nuzman, who has been arrested, was presented by his lawyer at a special COB assembly.

The assembly elected the COB vice-president Wanderley to take over as president.

The 75-year-old Nuzman stands accused of trying to help buy the vote of Lamine Diack, the disgraced former chief of the world governing athletics body IAAF and an ex-International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, with a 2-million-dollar payment via Brazilian companies in 2009.

Rio defeated Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago that year in an IOC vote to host the 2016 Games. Tokyo later won the right to host in 2020.

News reports also said that Nuzman stored 16 kilos of gold in Switzerland.

Nuzman, who was chief organizer of the Rio Games, was arrested on October 5 and the next day provisionally suspended as honorary member of the IOC and withdrawn from the Tokyo 2020 coordination commission. The IOC also suspended the COB.

The former volleyball player, who had led the COB for 22 years, has denied the allegations and said in the resignation letter he will fight them with "appropriate legal means."

The affair has further tarnished the image of the first Olympics in South America which suffered from corruption allegations, major budget cuts among a nationwide recession, poor attendance and unused venues in the aftermath.
