Berlin (dpa) - The number of first-time asylum requests in the European Union shrank by around half in 2017 compared with the previous year‘s, according to a report published by Funke Media Group newspapers on Wednesday.

In 2017, 649,855 applications were submitted across the EU‘s 28 member countries, compared with 1.206 million in 2016, the report said, citing figures from the European statistical office Eurostat.

The majority were submitted in Germany which received 198,255 applications, followed by Italy (126,550), France (91,070) and Greece (57,020).

Germany‘s 30 per cent share of total applications in the EU in 2017 was down from 60 per cent in 2016.

The Eurostat data only covered first-time applications. Adding second and subsequent applications, the total EU number rose to 704,625 and to 222,560 in Germany.

Germany‘s Interior Ministry, in data released Monday, said it had received 11,000 first-time asylum applications in February, 1,300 less than in January and 3,300 less than February 2017.

The majority of recent asylum seekers came from Syria, Iraq and Nigeria.

According to Germany‘s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), which also took second and subsequent requests into account, there were 12,490 applications in February.
